The Lady Broncs borrowed the US Postal Service's slogan and added a bit of their own words... "neither snow, nor rain, nor road closures, nor a broken down bus" would keep the Lady Broncs from entering Tuesday's (Feb. 17) game versus Cal State-Bakersfield at Icardo Center. The Lady Broncs (12-13) came up short falling 74-62.
The Lady Broncs spent the afternoon at a truck stop waiting for the bus company to send another bus. The replacement bus finally arrived and the team pulled up to the gymnasium 45 minutes before tip-off without time for a shootaround.
"We played miraculously well for such difficult circumstances," said women's head coach DeAnn Craft. "We had three players in double figures and I am proud of the way our team handled the problems we faced."
As the Lady Broncs shot 40 percent for the game, the women held back CSUB's leading scorer Christine Kepenekian to 10 points as she scored 26 points in the last meeting on Jan. 17. UTPA improved their free throw percentage as well as they shot 85 percent from the foul line.
UTPA outscored CSUB 11-5 in second chance points entering the half and outscored the Lady Roadrunners 6-0 in the second half with fast break points.
Three Lady Broncs finished in double-figures with Teshay Winfrey scoring 19 points for the Lady Broncs with a perfect 4-of-4 trip to the foul line along with five rebounds. Freshman Brittany Demery finished the night with 15 points on 7-of-6 shooting from the field adding nine rebounds, nearly missing a double-double. Epiphany Smith was the only other Lady Bronc to finish in double-figures with 14 points and two rebounds, assists and steals.
The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 21 as they face Great West-foe NJIT at the UTPA Fieldhouse with tip-off slated for 5:00 p.m. CT. Saturday will also serve as Senior Night for the Lady Broncs.
