For the third time this season, The University of Texas-Pan American men's tennis program dropped a close 4-3 decision to Idaho this Sunday (Feb. 22) morning at the New Mexico State Tennis Center.
"We had a lot of missed opportunities, but if we take care of our chances and opportunities we'll end up on the winning side," said Graduate Assistant Oliver Steil.
The men started off with a point in doubles as they won two-of-three matches in doubles. Aswin Vijayaragavn partnered up with Nirvick Mohinta for an 8-2 victory over Artem Kuznetsov and Alexandru Joitoiu in the number-one spot of the rotation. The Broncs next win came from Beau Bernstein and Andrew Irving as they handed Stanislav Glukhov and Alan Shin a devastating 9-8 (5) loss.
Brett Bernstein and Marcus Dornauf were the only Broncs to drop their match as they lost 8-6 to Robert Chalkley and Timothy Huynh in the number-two spot of the lineup.
UTPA added two more wins in singles' play as Brett Bernstein defeated Chalkley 6-2, 7-5 in the number-four spot of the lineup. The Broncs next win came from brother Beau Bernstein in the number-five spot as he defeated Timothy Huynh 7-6 (3), 3-6, 7-6 (5).
In the number-one spot of the rotation, Vijayaragavan dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Kuznetsov while Mohinta dropped a third set match to Glukhov by a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. In the number-three spot of the lineup, Joitoiu defeated Irving by a score of 7-6 (6), 5-7, 6-1 and in the last spot of the lineup, Shin defeated Dornauf 7-5, 6-2.
"Our task this week is to put the weekend behind us and concentrate on Tuesday's match against Nicholls State since it's a conference match. We need to take one match at a time," added Steil.
