It took the Broncs only seven tries before they notched their first win of the season as UTPA (1-7) defeated Nicholls State 4-3 this Wednesday (Feb. 25) afternoon at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
"This is fantastic that we were able to get our first win where it really counts (against a Southland Conference opponent). The guys played really well and all the things they have been working really hard in practice paid off and it got us some results," said interim head coach Chris Gill.
Doubles competition was taken care of quickly as Nicholls State picked up the point with wins in the number-one and -two spot. Radu Ionescu and Abhaya Prakish defeated Aswin Vijayaragavan and Nirvick Mohinta 8-4 while Phenyo Matong and Eric Fisher defeated Brett Bernstein and Marcus Dornauf 8-6 respectively.
The Broncs lone win in doubles came in the number-three spot from Beau Bernstein and Andrew Irving as they defeated Rohan Shetty and Sami Mouline 8-4.
The men did not let doubles get to them as they picked up four wins in singles action.
Vijayaragavan broke a two-match lose streak as he defeated Ionescu 7-5, 6-4 in the number-one spot. The Bernstein brothers both picked up wins as Brett Bernstein handed Matong a 6-3, 6-2 setback and Beau Bernstein handed Mouline a 6-4, 6-0 setback. Marcus Dornauf picked up his first singles win of the season as he defeated Shetty 6-0, 6-3 in the number-six spot.
Nicholls State picked up their only two wins in singles in the number-two and -three spot of the rotation as Fisher defeated Mohinta 6-2, 6-1 and Prakish defeated Irving 2-6, 6-0, 7-6.
The men next travel to Dallas as they face Southern Methodist this Sunday, March 1 with match-time slated for 12:00 p.m. CT.
