On the second day of the Al Ogletree Classic, the Broncs faced Texas-Arlington which ended in a 4-0 loss this Saturday (Feb. 28) afternoon at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
"We met our defensive goals today. Our pitching and defense is getting better but this year it is not about wins and losses but just about getting better overall," said head coach Manny Mantrana.
Although the Broncs remained scoreless throughout the contest, the Broncs gave up a single run in the second, with two more runs in the fourth and gave up the final run in the ninth.
Starting pitcher Nathan Molina, who is now 0-2 for the season, pitched three complete innings giving up the lone run in the second. Molina was then relieved by junior college transfer Anthony Garcia who gave up two runs in four innings pitched. Second-baseman Abraham Garcia finished the evening 2-for-3.
"This has been the best that Molina and Garcia have pitched since the season started," added Mantrana.
The Mavericks designated hitter Matt Otteman finished the evening 2-for-4 while driving in one run.
The Broncs wrap up the Al Ogletree Classic this Sunday (March 1) as they face Stephen F. Austin with first-pitch slated for 1:00 p.m. CT.
