The University of Texas-Pan American baseball program (5-18) wrapped up the three-game series against Prairie View A&M this Sunday (March 22) afternoon at Edinburg Baseball Stadium where the Broncs dropped a 14-5 decision to the Panthers.
"The offense did well; they are still working hard with the 15 hits they got. We continue struggling with the same problem and that's our pitching," said head coach Manny Mantrana. "We'll have a day off and start off new on Tuesday."
As UTPA trailed by one run entering the fourth, the Broncs managed to give up five runs in the fourth to give the Panthers a 7-1 advantage.
The Broncs were able to score a run in the bottom of the fourth to trail by five, but allowed Prairie View to score a single run in the fifth to make the score 8-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Broncs hustled to put two runs up on the board with runs scored by Jose Salmon as he crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Brandon Kendricks. Bonham Hough then scored the second run of the sixth on a RBI single to the left side by shortstop Andrew Perez.
The Panthers recorded another six runs in the top of the seventh to give Prairie View a 14-4 advantage over the Broncs. The Broncs were able to post a single run in the bottom of the eighth as centerfielder Bonham Hough managed to steal second and third and score on a ground out to third by Perez.
Bonham Hough and Nick Spears both finished 3-for-4 with Hough adding a RBI and two runs and Spears adding one run. Jordan Rutenbar and Jose Salmon also finished 3-for-5 with Salmon adding another run. The Broncs starting pitcher Tim Tefft earned his first loss of the season with three strikeouts and four walks.
Prairie View's Myrio Richards finished 3-for-5 for the Panthers with four RBI and three runs.
The Broncs hit the road as they travel to San Antonio, Texas to face the UTSA Roadrunners on Tuesday, March 24 with first pitch slated for 3:00 p.m. CT.
