The University of Texas-Pan American baseball program (5-19) had another rough outing this Tuesday (March 24) afternoon at Roadrunner Field as they were handed a 17-10 setback by UTSA.
Once again pitching wasn't on UTPA's side as the Broncs struggled on the mound. The Broncs gave up 12 runs in the second to give the Roadrunners a 12-1 lead. Starting pitcher David De Leon (0-5), who was also charged with the loss, walked three batters back-to-back and gave up a single and double before being pulled and placing Nathan Molina on the mound.
The Broncs were able to put some runs on the board as they scored four runs in the fifth. The first came off a single to left center by Jordan Rutenbar driving in Andrew Perez. Garrett Bivone then blasted a three-run homer over the left field wall to bring in Rutenbar and Bonham Hough to make the score 5-13.
Garrett Bivone, who finished 2-for-5 with five RBI and one run, drove in two more runs in the sixth off a two-run double to right center driving in Rutenbar and Hough once again to bring the Broncs within six, 13-7.
UTSA scored two more runs in the sixth to give the Roadrunners a 15-7 advantage, but the Broncs came back with two more runs in the top of the seventh. UTPA scored off a RBI single to left center by Jose Salmon allowing catcher Nick Spears to score and another RBI single to center by Perez allowing Salmon to cross the plate.
The Broncs scored their last run in the ninth off a Tim Tefft solo homerun to left field to make the final score 17-10 Roadrunners.
Along with Bivone's 2-for-5 plate appearance, the first baseman recorded one double and his first homerun of the season.
UTSA's Jason Mohn did exceptionally well for the Roadrunners as he went 3-for-4 with seven RBI, three runs, and two bombs.
The Broncs return to Edinburg Baseball Stadium this Thursday (March 26) as they play host to the New Mexico State Aggies in a three-game series. First pitch for all three contests is set for 6:00 p.m. CT.
