Broncs Drop Double Header with TAMUCC

After hosting the Al Ogletree Classic just two days ago, the Broncs (0-9) faced the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders in a scheduled double-header this Tuesday (Mar. 3) afternoon where the Broncs dropped the first game 13-6 and the second 6-2 at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

"We didn't play well and they wanted the win more than we did, and it showed today," said head coach Manny Mantrana. "They didn't compete out there today."

The Broncs were off to a rough start as they gave up five runs in the third to give the Islanders a 5-0 lead. Corpus scored two more runs in the sixth, but in the bottom of the sixth, the Broncs posted their first run of the game as Ryan Vest singled up the middle bringing in Andrew Perez.

UTPA scored their second run of the game in the following inning after Jordan Rutenbar hit into a double play and allowed Abraham Garcia to score.

Corpus record another inning with five runs scored in the top of the sixth and would be the final runs scored by the Islanders. The Broncs still had three more opportunities to put some runs on the board and took advantage of it.The Broncs posted two more runs in the seventh and their last two in the eighth. In the seventh, Tim Tefft pinch hit for Billy Donaho and singled to left field recording two runs-batted-in allowing Garrett Bivone and Abraham Garcia to score. In the eighth, designated hitter Esequiel Garza doubled on a close hit down the left field line bringing in Bivone and Garcia to make the score 13-6.

Abraham Garcia finished game one 3-for-5 with three runs, a double and a triple.

Game two was no different for the Broncs as they dropped a 6-2 decision to the Islanders.

The Broncs got off to an early start with a run in the second as Andrew Perez doubled down the right field line driving in Esequiel Garza.

Starting pitcher David De Leon gave up four runs in the fourth which would mark the one bad inning for UTPA. The Islanders managed to score a single run in the next two innings making the score 6-2.

The Broncs posted their final run of the evening in the bottom of the sixth as catcher Jordan Rutenbar hit a sacrifice fly to left field allowing Bonham Hough to score.

Shortstop Andrew Perez finished game two 2-for-3 with one RBI while David De Leon (0-3) earned the loss for game two.

The Broncs take a two-day break before heading to Corpus Christi, TX to compete in the Whataburger Classic this Friday (Mar. 6) as they face Alabama on day one of the tournament. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m. CT.
