The University of Texas-Pan American baseball program (5-27) was handed a 15-2 setback by the Houston Cougars this Sunday (April 5) afternoon at Cougar Field.
As the Broncs managed to post a lone run in the opening inning, UTPA struggled on the mound as they gave up eight runs in the first three frames of play and another two in the fifth.
Late in the ball game, the Broncs posted another single in the top of the sixth on a ground out to second by Garrett Bivone allowing Jose Mendoza to score for the Broncs. Mendoza finished the contest 2-for-3 with two runs and a stolen base.
Before the contest was over, the Broncs gave up another three runs in the bottom of the eighth to give the Cougars a 15-2 advantage.
In the top of the ninth, the Broncs were able to score a run on a wild pitch as pinch hitter Thomas Tovar crossed the plate. But it wasn't enough for the Broncs as the Cougars defeated the Broncs 15-3.
The Broncs return to Edinburg Baseball Stadium as they host the UT-Brownsville Scorpions on Wednesday, April 8 followed by a three-game series against TCU beginning Thursday, April 9. First pitch against the Scorpions is slated for 6:00 p.m. CT.
