After coming from behind to tie the score at 12 in the top of the fifth, the Broncs (11-40) fell short and dropped a 25-18 decision in game four against Northern Colorado this Tuesday (May 12) afternoon at Jackson Field in Greeley, Colorado.
The Broncs led in the first two innings of play but gave up the lead as they allowed Northern Colorado to drive in four runs in the bottom of the third.
UTPA came back in the top of the fifth as they scored five runs to tie the score at 12. The Broncs started things off in the fifth with a shot to left field by Jose Mendoza. Then with bases loaded, Garrett Bivone singled to first allowing Esequiel Garza to score. Thomas Tovar then singled to left center driving in two runs - Andrew Perez and Ryan Vest to close out the inning.
Northern Colorado took control of the ball game in the bottom of the fifth as they scored at least one run in each of the following innings to defeat the Broncs 25-18.
UTPA scored 18 runs on 23 hits, while Northern Colorado scored their 25 runs on 19 hits. The Broncs saw unfamiliar faces on the mound as Iradier Hernandez, Garrett Bivone and Ryan Vest each took turns on the mound, but it was Garrett Bivone who was tagged with the loss.
Hernandez struggled with the two batters he faced and was replaced by first baseman Garrett Bivone who pitched one and one-third innings striking out none, walking one and giving up six runs on five hits. Vest followed with two and one-third innings of work as he struck out one, walked one and gave up nine runs on eight hits.
Ryan Vest led the Broncs offensively with a 5-for-6 plate appearance along with four RBI, three runs and two doubles. Thomas Tovar added a 3-for-6 plate appearance with five RBI and a double.
The Broncs return to Edinburg Baseball Stadium next week as they host the National Independent Tournament on May 21-24.
