Franco Lifts Broncs to 6-2 Victory over Huskies

In just his fourth start of the season, sophomore AJ Franco pitched his second complete game of the season as he lifted the Broncs to a 6-2 victory over the Houston Baptist Huskies this Friday (May 22) night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The Broncs record back-to-back wins against the Huskies and improved their overall record to12-41 for the season, while HBU falls to 10-40 for the season.

UTPA scored their six runs on 11 hits and recorded no errors with the Huskies scoring their two runs on six hits and recorded three errors.

This is the second night in a row that a UTPA pitcher records a career-high in strike outs. AJ Franco recorded a career-high eight strikeouts and walked two batters.

The Broncs scored four runs in the first two frames and added their final two runs in the sixth.

Andrew Perez and Nick Spears scored four of the six runs for the Broncs. The duo combined for a 4-for-7 plate appearance along with two runs apiece with Spears adding an RBI.

The Broncs scored their first two runs in the first on a single up the middle by Ryan Vest allowing Garrett Bivone and Bonham Hough to score. Perez and Spears scored their four runs in the second and sixth.

Houston Baptist's Kolby Arnst and Zeke Zikeli scored the Huskies only two runs and combined for a 3-for-7 plate appearance.

The Broncs and Huskies wrap up the 2009 National Independent Tournament tomorrow (May 23) afternoon as Northern Colorado will play a double-header as they face the Huskies at 3:00 p.m. and the Broncs at 7:00 p.m. at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
