The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball squad (0-2) opened up its 2009 campaign at the Comfort Suites/SHSU Invitational this Friday, Aug. 28 in Huntsville, Texas where they faced Louisiana-Lafayette in the season opener and dropped a 3-0 decision followed by a 3-1 loss to host-squad Sam Houston State.
Louisiana-Lafayette 3, UTPA 0
The Lady Broncs fought a good fight against the Lady Cajun as they dropped a 3-0 decision this morning to LA-Lafayette.
The Lady Broncs struggled in the beginning of game one but picked up the pace as they managed to tie the score at mid-game (16-16) on a kill my Noelle Mayor. Both teams kept the remainder of the match neck-and-neck, but a kill on Lafayette's side led the way for a 25-22 defeat over the Lady Broncs.
UTPA kept the momentum going in the start of game two as they held the lead for three-quarters of the game. With the Lady Cajuns nipping at the heels of the Lady Broncs, Lafayette managed to tie the score late in the game (18-18) and took the final lead of the game to defeat the Lady Broncs 25-18.
As the Lady Broncs trailed LA-Lafayette in the final game of the match, UTPA went on an 8-2 run before Lafayette could score again to tie the score at 20. The Lady Broncs came back once again to tie the score at 21 but let the Lady Cajuns slide through as UTPA dropped its final game 25-21.
Junior Marci Logan concluded game one with seven kills, five digs and two blocks while Rebecca Toddy collected 11 digs and freshman Sarah Davis added five blocks for the Lady Broncs.
Sam Houston 3, UTPA 1
In the second game of the season, the Lady Broncs faced host-squad Sam Houston State where they dropped a 3-1 decision this afternoon.
The Lady Broncs struggled in game one as the Lady Bearkats defeated UTPA in a quick 25-13 set.
In the second game of the match, the Lady Broncs began with a bit more confidence and led the Bearkats to defeat them 25-21. UTPA began 3-0 before allowing Sam Houston to post a point on the board.
Both teams tied the score on three occasions with the last tie coming in the beginning of the contest (5-5) on a Bearkats service ace by Jamie Kaleh.
The Lady Broncs then took a different direction in the start of game three as they went 0-4 before earning a point on an attack error by Kelli Stewart. Marci Logan followed that play with a kill assisted by Rita Gonzalez.
Both teams played a close game with multiple ties with the last tie at 20 on a kill by Marci Logan. The Lady Broncs were unable to come back from the tie as the Lady Bearkats defeated UTPA 25-20.
In the final game of the second match, the Lady Broncs and Bearkats kept things interesting with a close match throughout. Both teams tied the score on nine occasions as each team took turns leading the contest; Sam Houston State defeated the Lady Broncs 25-20.
Marci Logan concluded game two with 14 kills and seven digs, while Rebecca Toddy collected 12 digs, Noelle Mayor added seven kills and two blocks and Ijanae Holman another five kills and five digs.
The Lady Broncs conclude the Comfort Suites/SHSU Invitational this Saturday (Aug. 29) with a 9:00 a.m. match against Southern Utah followed by a 4:30 p.m. match versus Delaware State.
