Lady Broncs Defeat Delaware State in Final Match

After dropping two matches the day before, the Lady Broncs (1-3) returned for day two of the Comfort Suites/SHSU Invitational hosted by Sam Houston State where they dropped a 3-1 decision to Southern Utah and came back to defeat Delaware State 3-1 in the final match of the tournament.

Southern Utah 3, UTPA 1
The Lady Broncs won the third set of the match against Southern Utah to take the match into four games.

In game one, the Lady Broncs managed to stay within two of the Lady Thunderbirds and took the lead after Southern Utah's Analaine Pelaez committed an attacking error giving UTPA the lead.

UTPA managed to hold onto their lead until Southern Utah went on a 3-0 run to tie the score after Sarah Davis committed an attacking error giving the Lady Thunderbirds the final lead of the contest. Southern Utah defeated UTPA 25-22.

The Lady Broncs struggled in game two as Southern Utah defeated the Lady Broncs 25-15 in a quick set.

After dropping two games, UTPA led the entire game (3) to come back and defeat Southern Utah 25-20, which would take the match into four games.

In the final game of the match, the Lady Broncs were determined to notch another win but fell short in the end after an attack error by Sarah Davis, which gave Southern Utah a one point lead, 27-26.

The Lady Broncs held a strong lead throughout most of the game, but allowed Southern Utah to catch up on an 9-2 run to make the score 22-22. Both teams remained competitive only allowing each club to score a single point to take the game past the 25 point mark. Southern Utah was able to take the final lead in the last minutes of play.

Once again Marci Logan finished on top for the Lady Broncs with 12 kills, seven digs and four blocks, while Rebecca Toddy collected 19 digs and Noelle Mayor added eight kills and three blocks and Kaitlin Vasquez added another 11 digs.

UTPA 3, Delaware State 1
The fourth time was a charm for the Lady Broncs as they were able to come from three matches behind to earn their first win of the season against Delaware State, who finished 0-4 this weekend.

The Lady Broncs went 0-5 before being able to score a point on a kill by Marci Logan, who finished game one with three kills and one block. Delaware State went on to defeat the Lady Broncs 25-16 in a quick set.

Starting off the second game down by two did not discourage the Lady Broncs as they went on a 10-0 run to take the lead over Delaware State. Delaware came from behind to tie the score at 17 and followed that with two more points to take a two point lead over the Lady Broncs.

Delaware remained in the lead in the final minutes of play but a kill by Ijanae Holman put the Lady Broncs back into contention and defeated Delaware State 25-23.

The Lady Broncs then went on to defeat Delaware State in the third and fourth set by a score of 25-19.

Junior Marci Logan nearly missed her first double-double of the season as she collected 11 kills, nine digs and one block, while senior Noelle Mayor added 12 kills and one block and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Mayor concluded the tournament with 31 kills, four digs and seven blocks. Meghan Fichtel concluded match four with nine kills, four digs and three blocks, while Rebecca Toddy added 25 digs and Ariana Bermea another 12 digs.

The Lady Broncs return to the UTPA Fieldhouse for their season home opener against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi this Tuesday, Sept. 1. The Lady Broncs have not faced the Lady Islanders since 2007 when UTPA defeated TAMUCC on UTPA's home court.
