Women's Volleyball Drops Hard-Fought Battle

In the "Battle of the Orange", The University of Texas-Pan American faced the UT-Brownsville Scorpions at the UTPA Fieldhouse where the Lady Broncs dropped a 3-0 decision in front of a crowd of 578 this Wednesday (Sept. 2) night.

"UTB is a great team that plays great volleyball; we just didn't respond like we should have," said third-year head coach Angela Hubbard. "We are going to evaluate what worked and what we need to work on and come back with a new mind set."

The Lady Broncs struggled in the first set as they saw themselves down 9-3 but rallied themselves up to a one-point deficit. UTPA struggled to keep the Lady Scorpions in their reach and fell short 25-21 in the first set.

UTPA saw themselves down two sets as they lost a quick 25-16 second set, but came back with a little bit more momentum in the third set. They found themselves down by one on a kill by Meghan Fichtel in the final plays of the set.

UT-Brownsville managed to score three more points over the Lady Broncs and wrapped up the third set of the "Battle of the Orange" with a score of 25-22.

Meghan Fichtel finished with a team-high seven kills along with two digs and one block, while Rebecca Toddy added 23 digs. Kaitlin Vasquez added another five kills for the Lady Broncs with one assist and nine digs.

The Lady Broncs take a week-long break before facing Cal State-Bakersfield on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Match-time is set for 7:00 p.m.
