Final Stats
The University of Texas-Pan American men's tennis program dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 12 Texas A&M this Saturday afternoon at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas.
"Our guys had moments of greatness and some moments where we weren't as focused. Of course this is expected early on in the season, but these are problem areas we will address and keep moving forward," said head men's and women's tennis coach Chris Taylor.
Texas A&M started off with a quick lead as the Aggies grabbed the doubles point with quick wins in No. 1 and 3 doubles. Brothers Beau and Brett Bernstein dropped an 8-1 decision to Jeff Dadamo and Austin Krajicek in No. 1 doubles, while Marcus Dornauf and Andrew Irving suffered an 8-2 setback to Alberto Bautista and Colin Hoover in No. 3 doubles.
The Broncs gave the Aggies a bit of a tough battle as TAMU's Niall Angus and Alex Klegou slipped away with an 8-7 win over Aswin Vijayaragavan and Nirvick Mohinta.
"Overall it was a great performance. [Texas] A&M is a good team; we came out and played hard and are now looking forward to Sunday's match with TCU and SMU on Monday," said junior Aswin Vijayaragavan.
UTPA picked up a lone win in No. 6 singles as Irving defeated Patrick Dean with a 6-4, 6-2 victory.
Marcus Dornauf was the first Bronc to complete his match with a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Hoover in No. 5 singles. Mohinta followed with a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Bautista in No. 4 singles. Vijayaragavan was the next to finish in No. 1 singles as he suffered a 6-3, 6-4 setback to Krajicek.
In No. 2 singles, Brett Bernstein dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Klegou and brother Beau Bernstein gave Angus some competition as he won the first set 6-3 and dropped his second 7-5. Bernstein started off hot with a 7-3 lead in the tiebreaker and lost his momentum and dropped the tiebreaker 10-7.
The Broncs remain in the Dallas area as they face the TCU Horned Frogs tomorrow morning (Jan. 24) at 10:00.
