Final Stats
The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball program (3-18) dropped a 66-51 decision to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders (11-8) this Monday (Jan. 25) evening at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The Islanders went on a 7-0 run before the Broncs were able to score two at the 16:50 mark. The Broncs immediately returned the favor and went on a 6-2 run to trail by one on an inside shot by Julius Hearn.
The Broncs were able to tie the score on three occasions in a 2:30 stretch. Both ball clubs remained scoreless until the 8:48 mark when Ben Smith committed his first foul and drew Terence Jones to the line. Jones made both free throws and gave the Islanders the final go-ahead.
UTPA scored the majority of their points in the second half with 33 points. Nineteen of the Broncs 33 in the second half came off of the Islanders 12 turnovers. The Broncs bench also stepped it up as they scored 20 points.
Matt Mierzycki was the Broncs leading scorer on 3-of-5 shooting from the field, including 8-of-12 from the free throw line, to go along with six rebounds and one steal.
Luis Valera contributed eight points for the Broncs, six in which came in the first half, to go along with five rebounds.
As a team, the Broncs shot 30 percent from the field, including 18 percent from three-point range and 64 percent from the line. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi shot 50 percent from the field, including 21 percent from three-point range and 65 from the line.
The loss drops the Broncs to 3-18 for the season and improves the Islanders to 11-8 for the season.
Up next for the Broncs is a conference match-up with the North Dakota Fighting Sioux at the UTPA Fieldhouse on Jan. 28 with tip-off slated for 8:00 p.m.
