The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball program suffered a 72-71 heartbreak over the South Dakota Coyotes this Saturday (Jan. 30) evening at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

The Broncs started off on fire as freshman Aaron Urbanus scored nine of the first 11 points of the game within 2:32 on the hardwood on a perfect 3-of-3 shooting from three-point range. Soon enough, UTPA extended their lead to double-figures and remained consistent in the remainder of the first half.

The Broncs held their largest lead of the night with 16 at the end of the first as Nathan Hawkins put up two for the Broncs with five seconds in regulation. UTPA headed into the locker rooms with a score of 51-35.

UTPA outscored the Coyotes in points in the paint (16-10), points off turnovers (9-2), second chance points (4-2), and fast break points (6-2) during the first frame. Urbanus also scored 14 of his 25 points during the first on 4-of-4 shooting from three-point range and a pair of free throws.

The Broncs continued on their hot streak coming out of the half, but were put at a halt after the Coyotes went on a 12-0 run to tie the score at 53 with 10:55 on the clock. The lead changed four times in the following 2:04 and UTPA managed to stay hot with a five point lead over South Dakota on a layup by Jared Maree with 7:19 on the clock.

The Broncs managed to let their lead slip once again as South Dakota tied the score for the third time during the second frame with 4:50 on the clock on a three by USD's Jake Thomas.

With a successful layup from Julius Hearn with 3:37 left in regulation, the Broncs managed to regain their lead once again, but led by one with 35 seconds on the clock as the Coyotes Jake Thomas pulled through again with a three-point shot.

With the Broncs leading by one, South Dakota immediately called for a timeout after their made bucket. The Broncs then turned the ball over coming out of the timeout as Jared Maree overthrew the inbound pass.

With 16 seconds left on the clock, both teams fought for the ball on a loose ball, but before the officials could blow the whistle, South Dakota called for a timeout and kept possession of the ball.

After both teams substituted players and continued play, the Coyotes missed a layup but was put back by Roman Gentry with three seconds left on the clock to give South Dakota the 72-71 lead. The Broncs called for their final timeout, but were unable to drain a three-point shot by Jared Maree at the buzzer.

Aaron Urbanus' 25 points was a season-high for the Austin, TX native as he registered 9-of-13 shooting from the field and a final 5-of-6 from three-point range.

Jared Maree added 13 points on 4-of-10 shooting from the field, including 1-of-2 from three-point range and a perfect 4-of-4 from the line, to go along with four assists and three rebounds.

Julius Hearn finished the evening with 11 points, seven rebounds, and three assists for the Broncs in 30 minutes of play.

Roman Gentry was the Coyotes top performer with 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field, including 1-of-4 from the three-point line and 2-of-4 from the charity stripe, to go along with eight boards in 36 minutes of action.

The Broncs return to the hardwood on Thursday, Feb. 4 as they head to Orem, UT to face the Utah Valley Wolverines for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off time.
