Lady Broncs Return the Favor, Defeat Islanders 84-76

The UTPA women's basketball team finished with four Lady Broncs in double-figures to lead the squad to an 84-76 victory over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders this Wednesday (Jan. 6) afternoon at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.

The win improves the Lady Broncs to 4-12 for the season and drops the Islanders to 8-5 for the season. UTPA will head into conference on a two-game win streak.

The Lady Broncs played a strong first half as they headed to the locker rooms leading by nine. Maria Ben Erlingsdottir led with 15 points with 3-of-4 shooting from three-point range, which took care of half of the team's shooting for the half.

UTPA held back the Islanders as the Lady Broncs went on a 15-0 run in a 6:45 stretch. The Islanders then scored one on a free throw by Shaye Montgomery, but the Lady Broncs extended their once held lead of 17 to 20 on two shots from beyond the arc by Erlingsdottir and Rachel Hester.

The Lady Broncs continued on the war path during the second half. In a 3:58 stretch, the Lady Broncs scored 11 points with seven of those coming from Aleeya Grigsby. Grigsby finished the evening with her second double-double of the season with 18 points and 14 rebounds.

Several Lady Broncs posted career-high's beginning with Maria Ben Erlingsdottir scoring 21 points along with two rebounds. Marah Guzman finished with nine points and career-high nine rebounds and eight assists. Rose Esther Jean added 10 points along with five boards and a career-high five blocks.

Shaye Montgomery was the Islanders top scorer with 23 points along with three assists, one rebound, and one steal.

The Lady Broncs next prepare for conference as they host NJIT on Jan. 14th with tip-off slated for 5:45 p.m. at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
