BRONCS DROP HOME MATCH TO HOUSTON BAPTIST 3-0

EDINBURG, Texas-  The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-18) decision to Great West Conference rival Houston Baptist on Saturday afternoon at the UTPA Fieldhouse. The loss was the second straight for the Broncs after dropping a 3-1 match to Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Tuesday.

 

UTPA (6-17, 3-5 GWC) looked strong in the opening moments, earning the first two points of the match with kills from Sarah David and Ijanae Holman. The Huskies (13-10, 5-2 GWC) would score the next three points to take a 3-2 lead. Later with the match tied at seven, HBU's Isis Gardner's kill sparked a 4-0 run to give the Huskies an 11-7 lead. The Broncs would not get to within three points of the Huskies the remainder of the set. HBU ended the set on 4-0 run to win 25-15.

 

UTPA kept things close in the second set as there were eight ties and five lead changes. With the match tied at 22-22 the Huskies took a two point led after kills from Sarah Hazelwood and Ashlee Karg, prompting a UTPA timeout. Marci Logan answered back with a kill of her own to pull the Broncs to within one at 24-23. HBU's Heather Leaverton answered back with a kill to give the Huskies a 25-23 second set victory.

 

The Huskies came out firing in the third set going on a 12-4 to start promoting a UTPA timeout. Back-to-back kills from Marci Logan pulled UTPA to within six at 12-6. Three straight points gave the Huskies a nine-point advantage at 15-6. Later in the set the Broncs pulled back to within four after three straight Meghan Fichtel kills to make the score 20-16. The two squads would trade the next four points for a 22-18 advantage for HBU. The Huskies would score the next four points to notch a 25-18 victory in both the set and won the match in a sweep 3-0.

 

Logan's 10 kills led the Broncs, giving her 978 for her UTPA career. Logan is 22-kills away from being the fifth Bronc to reach 1,000 kills for a career. Logan also added nine digs. Kaitlin Vasquez led on the defensive side of the net for UTPA with 19 digs. Rita Gonzalez added a team-high 18 assists while chipping in with six digs.

 

HBU's Leaverton led the Huskies with her 10 kills. Courtney Whittleman led the Huskies with 18 digs on defense. Victroia Weatherly had the match high in assists with 27.

 
The Broncs will look to get back on track when they face NJIT next Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse. The match is scheduled for a noon start.
