HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team continues it's 2010-11 season with their first road game of the season on Tuesday morning as they face off against the Tigers of Texas Southern University. The game is the home opener for the Tigers will have a special 11:30 AM tip-off at the HP&E Center and admission is free for elementary and middle school students.
The Broncs (1-0) are coming off their season opening 72-61 over Our Lady of the Lake University on Saturday night. CeMonay Newell scored a game high 23 points and hauled in seven rebounds to help lead UTPA to the 11-point victory over the Saints.
Franchesca Simon chipped in with 17 points while dishing out three assists to round out the double-figure scorers for UTPA.
The Broncs shot the ball well from the outside, hitting 11 three-point hoops in the victory. The Broncs also shot well the entire second half, by shooting at a 55% clip.
The Tigers are coming off a season opening 68-30 loss Oklahoma State in Stillwater, OK on Saturday. NaDosha Strickland scored eight points to lead for the Tigers, while Jasmine Payne chipped in with four points and a team-high seven rebounds.
The Broncs are 8-9 all-time against the Tigers, with the teams splitting the last two meetings. The Tigers won 65-58 in a tightly contested match-up in Edinburg last season. The Broncs won 47-38 at the HP&E Arena in December of the 2008-09 season as three Broncs scored in double-figures, including 11 points apiece for Teshay Winfrey and Epiphany Smith.
