Broncs to face HBU in first round of GWC Tournament

EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Broncs Volleyball team travels to Chicago, Ill. to compete in the Great West Conference (GWC) Volleyball Championship Nov. 19-21, hosted by Chicago State University.

The Broncs (8-21, 4-8 GWC) are the No. 5 seed entering the tournament and will play the No. 4 Houston Baptist University (HBU) Huskies (17-12, 7-5 GWC) during the opening round Friday at 2 p.m.

During the final week of regular-season competition last week, UTPA topped Prairie View A&M 3-0, but fell to South Dakota 1-3 and North Dakota 0-3. The Huskies were not able to escape North Dakota, falling 0-3 to the Fighting Sioux, but HBU was able to get past South Dakota 3-1.

Heading into tournament action, Marci Logan leads UTPA with 305 kills, followed by Ijanae Holman with 187 and Meghan Fichtel with 180. Defensively, Kaitlin Vasquez leads the Broncs with 367 digs. Early this season, Vasquez transitioned from outside hitter to the libero position.

Heather Leaverton leads the Huskies with 270 kills, followed by Isis Gardner with 265. Courtney Whittleman leads HBU with 528 digs.
