Broncs top Huskies 3-0 in first round GWC Tournament

EDINBURG, Texas – Senior Marci Logan's 13 kills helped the No. 5 University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Broncs Volleyball cruise past the No. 4 Houston Baptist (HBU) Huskies 3-0 (25-16, 28-26, 25-20) during the opening round of the Great West Conference Tournament Friday afternoon. This year's tournament is being hosted by Chicago State University at the Jones Convocation Center.

The Broncs (9-21, 4-8 GWC) started game one on top of the Huskies (17-13, 7-5 GWC) and were able to build an early 7-point advantage 10-3. A team effort with kills from Logan, Ijanae Holman, Sarah Davis, jimena Gandara and Meghan Fichtel helped the Broncs power through the first set and push their lead to 17-9. HBU fought back with points from Ashley Karg and Isis Gardner, but the Huskies could not catch up. UTPA won game one 25-16.

Davis tallied the first point of game two, but HBU fought back getting within 1 point, 6-5. Gandara answered, and helped the Broncs build their lead up to 10-7. The Huskies' Gardner and Jolie Graf helped HBU tie the set at 12. Two kills from Logan and Husky errors helped the Broncs regain their lead, but HBU came back again to tie four times. Two HBU errors gave the UTPA the game two 28-26 win.

HBU grabbed the first 2 points of the third and final set, but Logan responded to tie the game at 3. The Broncs were able to grab the lead, with the Huskies only catching up to tie at 8 and 9 points. A kill from Davis gave the Broncs the 10-9 lead that kept UTPA on top throughout the rest of the game, with their largest advantage by 13 points 21-12. Points from Heather Leaverton and a service ace from Paige Jenkins helped the Huskies close their deficit to 3 points 22-19. However, a kill from Davis and 3 HBU errors secured the match point for the Broncs 25-20.

Kaitlin Vasquez led the Broncs defensively with 18 digs, followed by Gonzalez, who chipped in 38 assists and 16 digs.
