NORMAN, Okla. – Sophomore guard Bianca Torre scored 26 points for the University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Broncs Friday evening in a 116-66 loss against the University of Oklahoma Sooners during the first day of the Basketball Travelers Invitational (BTI) Tournament. This year's tournament is hosted by Oklahoma at the Lloyd Noble Center.
The Sooners' (5-0) Danielle Robinson and Aaryn Ellenburg put up Oklahoma's first five points of the game, but a jumper from Adanna Opara put the Broncs (4-1) on the board 5-2. Two free throw shots by Ellenburg notched two more points for the Sooners, but Opara and Torre responded to close UTPA's deficit to one point 7-6.
Oklahoma was able to hold the Broncs and build its lead to 18 -6, but a foul on Morgan Hook sent Ashley Watson to the line. Watson sunk both shots to close the deficit to 10 points 18-8.
The Sooners continued to build their lead, but Torre and Ce'Monay Newell responded with back-to-back three point shots and continued to put up points for the Broncs. At the end of the first half, Oklahoma led 56-30.
Erin Lewis and Torre knocked down consecutive jumpers to start the second half, and Torre followed up from downtown, but the Sooners continued to control the game.
With 9:00 left in the second half, UTPA started to come back, notching three consecutive layups from LaQuita Garner, Donna Jackson and Lewis. However, the Broncs could not gain enough momentum to catch up. The Sooners continued to build their lead and claimed the game 116-66.
Torre went 10-16 in field goals and 4-6 from behind the three point arc to post 26 points for the Broncs. Jackson recorded 8 points, and Newell and Lewis each chipped in 7 points.
The Broncs will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when they face Prairie View A & M at 5 p.m., and will close BTI Tournament action Sunday at 2 p.m. against Gardner-Webb.
