NORMAN, Okla. – On the second day of the Basketball Travelers Invitational (BTI) Tournament, the University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) women's basketball team fell to the Prairie View A & M University (PVAMU) Panthers 84-63. The tournament is hosted by the University of Oklahoma at the Lloyd Noble Center.
The Panthers (2-2) took control early in the first half, scoring the first 7 points of the game. Maria Ben Erlingsdottir put the Broncs (4-2) on the board with a free throw shot, but Prairie View quickly gained a 14 point advantage.
Adanna Opara tallied two consecutive layups for UTPA, followed by a three-point shot from Ce'Monay Newell to bring the score to 20-8. Then, Bianca Torre followed up from downtown, while Opara chipped in another layup to help the Broncs close their deficit to 20-13. Opara, Jasmine Gordon and Donna Jackson continued to sink shots for UTPA during the first half, but the Panthers led 34-21 heading into halftime.
Newell opened the second half with a three-point shot, but PVAMU could not be stopped. The Panthers quickly built their lead to 27 points, 54-27. UTPA was able to cut into the Panthers' lead with a three from LaQuita Garner, a layup from Opara and two consecutive three-point shots from Newell that brought the score to 60-38 with 9:02 remaining in the second half.
Torre and Newell continued to lead the Broncs with threes as UTPA fought back, but Prairie View was able to maintain its lead, winning the contest 84-63.
Newell led UTPA with 18 points and went 6-8 from three-point range. Opara put up a double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and Torre tallied 11 points.
The Broncs will conclude the BTI Tournament Sunday when they face the Runnin' Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
