EDINBURG, Texas – Sophomore guard Bianca Torre scored 32 points to lead the Broncs in a 77-74 win over the University of North Texas Mean Green Friday, Dec. 10 at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Friday's win helped UTPA maintain a perfect 4-0 record at the Fieldhouse this season.
North Texas put the first 3 points of the game on the board with three free throw shots, but Torre responded with shot from downtown to tie the game at three. A layup from North Texas' Raquel Cuffie put the Mean Green up by three, 7-4, but a jumper and a free throw from Torre put the Broncs back on top 9-7.
The Mean Green stayed close to UTPA, stealing the 18-17 lead, but a shot from junior Adanna Opara gave the Broncs the 19-18 lead. North Texas took their last lead of the night with 4:42 left in the first half, following a three-point shot from Denetra Kellum 21-19. Senior Maria Ben Erlingsdottir notched a layup and Torre sunk another jumper to secure the UTPA lead, 25-23. The Broncs lead continued to grow through the end of the first half. UTPA lead 36-30 at halftime following a three-point shot at the buzzer from Erin Lewis.
The Broncs returned taking control of the first minutes of the second half. At the 13:36 mark, they led by 11 points, following baskets from Torre, Lewis and Donna Jackson. Slowly, the Mean Green fought back and were able to close their deficit to one point 55-54 at the 8:16 mark on a jumper from Jasmine Godbolt. Junior Ce'Monay Newell responded with a three-point shot to put the Broncs back up by four, 58-54.
UTPA was able to remain in the lead, but North Texas refused to back down in the final minutes of the contest. With 2:46 left in the game, two free throws from Torre put the Broncs up by seven, 71-64, but Tamara Torru responded with a shot from behind the arc for the Mean Green to close their deficit to four points, 71-67. With just seconds left in the game North Texas cut their deficit to two points, but a free throw from Lewis secured the Broncs' 77-74 win.
Torre's 32 points notched a career-high for the guard, and also tied her at eighth in the record books in individual points per game with Becky Dube, who scored 32 points against Texas A & I on Nov. 22, 1985.
Also leading the Broncs tonight was Jackson with 13 points and Lewis with 12 points, 8 rebounds.
Sunday, Dec. 12, the Broncs travel to San Marcos, Texas to face the Bobcats of Texas State University. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. (CT).
Following Sunday's contest, the Broncs will be back at home Tuesday to host the Texas A & M-International Dust Devils. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
