WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) women's basketball team (7-7) fell 95-55 Sunday afternoon the Wichita State University Shockers (6-4) at the Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kan.
The Shockers started the first half strong following baskets from Heather Robben and Breanna Dawkins, but a jumper from Ce'Monay Newell and a three-point shot from Bianca Torre put the Broncs on the board 10-5. Wichita State was able to maintain their lead, but Torre fought back for UTPA tallying back-to-back shots, while Erin Lewis chipped in a basket to cut the deficit to 18-11 with 9:19 remaining in the half.
Torre remained the leader for the Broncs throughout the first half, and senior Maria Ben Erlingsdottir was also able to knock down a shot from behind the arc to help UTPA stay in the game. However, the Shockers were able to maintain control of the scoreboard, leading UTPA 49-25 at the half.
Newell started the second half of the contest with a layup for the Broncs, followed by a three and a jumper from Torre. LaQuita Garner also put up a layup to bring the score to 59-35 with 15:34 left in the game.
Although UTPA was able to put up some shots, Robben and Morgan Boyd continued to score for the Shockers. Newell continued to respond with shots from downtown to keep the Broncs moving forward in the second half. Junior Re-Shawndra Jackson also knocked down a three and a layup with 5:05 on the clock, but Wichita State's lead continued to grow. The Shockers claimed the game 95-55.
Torre led the Broncs this afternoon with 21 points, followed by Newell with 13 points, 5 rebounds.
The Broncs will be back in action at home Tuesday, Dec. 28 when they host Sam Houston State at 7 p.m. at the UTPA Fieldhouse. UTPA remains undefeated, 5-0, at home this season.
