EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team saw six players score double-digits tonight to top the Sam Houston State University Bearkats (6-7) 78-66 at the UTPA Fieldhouse. The Broncs (8-7) remain undefeated on their home court.
The Bearkats put up the first basket of the night on a layup by Clarke Davis, but Ce'Monay Newell responded for the Broncs with a shot from downtown to take the 3-2 lead. Adanna Opara followed up with a jumper, but a layup from Davis and a three-point shot from Britni Martin put Sam Houston State back in the lead, 7-5. Donna Jackson answered with a layup and shot from the line to put the Broncs ahead 8-7.
UTPA and Sam Houston State traded the lead nine times before the Broncs took control of the contest with 11:56 left in the first half on a layup by Re-Shawndra Jackson, 18-16.
Newell knocked down another three-point shot to put the Broncs ahead by 12 points, 34-22 with 6:14 remaining in the first half. Chanice Smith and Davis were able to connect and fight back for the Bearkats, but UTPA maintained their lead. Heading into the half, the Broncs were up 14 points, following two shots at the line by Lewis 46-32.
Bianca Torre tallied a layup to open the second half of the game to help the Broncs build their lead to 16 points, 48-32. Davis made a layup, followed by a two-point shot from Smith to close the Bearkats deficit to 10 points at the 12:45 mark.
Re-Shawndra and Donna Jackson led the Broncs to keep UTPA up by 14 points with 8:30 left in the game, but the Bearkats slowly closed in on the Broncs. Sam Houston State was able to close their deficit to 5 points, 69-64 with 1:58 remaining.
Lewis sunk five more shots from the line, and Re-Shawndra Jackson and Donna Jackson chipped in another pair of shots to help the Broncs win 78-66.
Donna Jackson led the Broncs with 17 points, followed by Torre with 14 points. Re-Shawndra Jackson tallied 12 points, followed by Lewis, who recorded 11 points and 8 assists. Newell tallied 10 points, while Opara put up 10 points and 17 rebounds.
The Broncs will be back on the road later this week when they face Baylor Thursday, Dec. 30 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 2 when they take on Oklahoma State at 2 p.m.
