BRONCS HOST BEARKATS TONIGHT

EDINBURG, Texas - The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Broncs women's basketball team is set to host the Bearkats of Sam Houston State University at 7 p.m. today at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

The Broncs (7-7) enter tonight's game following a road loss Dec. 19 at Wichita State. Earlier this month, UTPA cruised past Texas A & M - International with a 94-60 win and topped Texas State on the road 83-76.

Sophomore guard Bianca Torre leads the Broncs with 19.8 points per game, followed by junior Ce'Monay Newell with 16.9 points per game. In statistics released last week by the NCAA, Newell leads all Division I players in three point field-goals per game with 4.1. Erin Lewis ranks second in assists with 7.1 per game, and Torre is at 19th in points per game with 19.8.

The Bearkats (6-6) enter tonight's contest following three straight losses to North Texas, Houston Baptist and TCU.

Sam Houston State has three players averaging double figures in the points column - Britni Martin with 16.4, Sequeena Thomas with 14.9 and Chanice Smith with 14.8. Thomas also leads the team in rebounds with 10.3 per game.

Later this week, the Broncs will hit the road to face Baylor Thursday, Dec. 30 at 7 p.m. (CT) in Waco, Texas.
