ARLINGTON, Texas – Sophomore guard Bianca Torre scored 29 points this afternoon to lead the University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Broncs in an 81-72 loss to the UT-Arlington (UTA) Mavericks at Texas Hall.

A jumper from Torre and a layup from Adanna Opara started the first half for UTPA (4-5), but the Mavs (3-5) grabbed the 6-4 lead with two free throw shots by Shalyn Martin. A jumper from Erin Lewis and two more layups from Opara put the Broncs back on top 10-9.

However, UTA fought back and quickly took an 8 point lead, 22-14. The Mavs lead eventually grew to twelve points, 36-24, but a jumper from Torre, followed by a three from Ce'Monay Newell, and two more three-point shots from Torre rapidly closed UTPA deficit to one point, 36-35 with 4:31 left in the first half.

UTA's Tamara Simmons responded to UTPA's comeback with a jumper, but Newell knocked down another shot to keep the Broncs within one point. Heading into halftime, the Mavericks held a 46-43 lead over UTPA.

UTA extended their lead to 48-43 at the start of the second half, but Donna Jackson and Torre helped the Broncs stay within five points. Senior Maria Ben Erlingsdottir closed the Broncs' deficit to two points with 12:30 left in the second half with shot from behind the arc.

The Broncs were able to keep the score close with the Mavs, but could not get past them. With 7:52 left in the second half, UTA took a nine-point lead, 68-59. Two layups and two shots at the line from Torre helped the Broncs get within five points, 72-67 with 2:53 left in the game, but the Mavericks were able to build their lead once again, and won the contest 81-72.

In addition to Torre's 29 points, Newell posted 16 points, and Opara tallied 10 points and 8 rebounds.

The Broncs will be back in action Wednesday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. when they travel to Austin, Texas to face the Longhorns of the University of Texas.

UTPA will be back on their home court Friday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. when they host the University of North Texas at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
