AUSTIN, Texas – Sophomore Bianca Torre posted 18 points tonight to lead the Broncs (4-6) in a 112-59 loss to the University of Texas Longhorns tonight at the Erwin Center in Austin, Texas.
The Longhorns(5-2) started the first half of the contest strong, but two shots from Torre and an additional jumper and three-point shot from Ce'Monay Newell. Junior Donna Jackson followed up with a jumper to bring the score to 34-14 at the 6:37 mark.
Torre fought back for UTPA as Texas' lead grew, knocking down a jumper and shot from behind the arc. Newell also tallied another three-point shot before heading into halftime. The Longhorns lead 22-51 at the half.
Newell posted the Broncs' first field goal of the second half on a two-point shot that brought the score to 62-24. Then, UTPA's bench stepped up with a layup from Ashley Watson and a shot from downtown from LaQuita Garner. Garner continued to sink shots for the Broncs with a layup and another three-pointer.
UTPA continued to fight their way back throughout the second half, but could not get past the Longhorns. Torre, with the help of Jackson and Watson led the Broncs through the final minutes of the contest, but the Longhorns topped UTPA 112-59.
The Broncs saw four players post double figures in the points column this evening. In addition to Torre's 18 points, Newell posted 12 points, while Jackson recorded 11 and Garner 10 points.
Following six straight road games, the Broncs are back at home Friday when they host North Texas at 7 p.m. at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
