FLAGSTAFF, Arizona – The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball team could not find an answer for Northern Arizona guard Cameron Jones, who scored a game high 27 points, leading the Lumberjacks to the 68-55 win over the Broncs Wednesday night at the Rolle Activity Center. UTPA is still looking for their first road win of the season as they fell to 0-3 in true road games this season.
The Lumberjacks got off to a quick start beginning the game on a 10-2 run with six points belonging to Jones. The Broncs trailed 13-8 with 14:50 left in the first half after Durrell Norman's three-point play. The defense picked up on both ends as neither team converted a field goal for the next 5:26 of the game when NAU's DeAngelo Jones hit a lay-up to give NAU a 17-8 lead.
The Broncs would fall behind by as many as 14 in the period before sparking a rally. UTPA trailed 23-9 with 6:23 remaining until the intermission. The Broncs erupted for a 14-5 run, capped off by an
Enique Mason lay-up as the Broncs cut the deficit down to 28-23. UTPA trailed 29-23 at the half.
UTPA chipped away at the Lumberjack lead even further by scoring the first four points of the second half and cutting the NAU lead to 29-27. The Lumberjacks would answer back with a 17-9 run and led 46-35 with 10:17 remaining in regulation. The Lumberjacks outscored UTPA 39-32 in the second half to earn the victory.
The Broncs struggled with their outside shooting, which had been a strength entering the game. UTPA made just two of their 18 three-point attempts on Wednesday. Perry's 13 points was the only double-digit scoring night for the Broncs.
Aaron Urbanus scored nine points while
Jared Maree scored eight points apiece to chip-in for UTPA.
Jones was the lone double-digit scorer for NAU as well scoring 27 points, including going 11-for-13 from the foul line, while hauling in five rebounds to lead for the Jacks. Gabe Rogers chipped in with eight points. Meanwhile, Shane Johannsen, Stallon Saldivar and Jones each added seven points. Johannsen was also the leading rebounder for NAU with 10.
The road trip continues on Friday when the Broncs travel to Pullman, Washington to face the Cougars of Washington State. Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 9:00 PM CT.
