Final Stats
EDINBURG, TX--With all starters in double figures and two with double-doubles, The University of Texas-Pan American Lady Broncs defeated Houston Baptist, 79-66, this evening (Feb. 10) on Sam Williams Court at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The Lady Broncs opened up the game with a 7-0 run before Houston Baptist was able to get on the board after a pair of three throws by Jamie Spriggs making it a five point game with 17:41 showing on the clock.
The Broncs built their lead to as many as 12 before HBU began chipping away at the lead. HBU took a 31-29 lead after a three-point basket by Megan Green with 5:38 left in the half. The half saw three more lead changes before the Lady Broncs took a 44-40 lead into the locker room.
HBU started the second half with a 6-0 run taking a 48-44 lead with 17:59 left in the game. The lead would change two more times before the Lady Broncs would take control of the game taking the lead for good after two free throws by Rachel Hester gave the Lady Broncs a 52-50 lead with 13:35 left in the game.
"I am proud of our effort tonight. We're sharing the ball, the ball is moving and you can see that with the number of assists," said head coach Denny Downing. "They're looking for each other, we're getting good looks at the basket, and they are making shots," added Downing.
The Lady Broncs were led by Bianca Torre with a game high 21 points and eight assists. Rose Esther Jean recorded a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Aleeya Grigsby also recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Marah Guzman added 12 points while Maria Ben Erlingsdottir scored 10 points to round out the Lady Broncs top scorers.
Jamie Spriggs led HBU with 19 points. Megan Green came off the bench and scored 14 points. Taniqua Hollis scored 12 points and Brittany Maxey added 10 points to wrap up the leading scorers for HBU.
The Lady Broncs shot 54.5% from the field, 31.3% from beyond the three-point line and 77.8% from the free-throw line. HBU shot 36.8% from the field, 33.3% from behind the three-point arc and 76.9% from the free-throw line.
The Lady Broncs return to action on Saturday (Feb. 13), Senior Night, with the final home conference game of the season. Game time is slated for 4:30p.m. on Sam Williams Court at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
