Final Stats
A late rally by the Highlanders leads NJIT to a 70-66 victory over the Lady Broncs this Saturday (Feb. 20) afternoon at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center in Newark, NJ.
The Lady Broncs were led by senior Aleeya Grigsby with 18 points, followed by Bianca Torre, who scored 16 points, and Marah Guzman, who chipped in for 14 points.
Senior Rose Esther Jean added eight points for UTPA, while grabbing 11 rebounds and deflecting the ball on a career-high six occasions. Jean now needs nine blocks to tie the program's all-time record in blocks of 133, which was set by MaHogany Daniel.
UTPA got off to a late start as the Highlanders went on a 7-0 run to start the contest; a layup by Rose Esther Jean at the 15:55 mark put the Lady Broncs up on the board.
The Lady Broncs then went on a 11-4 run to come within two of the Highlanders with 9:44 on the clock. UTPA was unable to hold onto their two-point deficit while NJIT led by as much as 13 with 3:20 left in regulation.
The Lady Broncs were able to close the first half on a 9-2 run and trailing by six heading into the half. Marah Guzman scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half on 5-of-7 shooting from the field, including 1-of-1 from three-point range, and 1-of-1 from the line in 20 minutes of play - in the first half.
UTPA was not able to hold a lead in the second half, but came as close as two with 6:24 on the clock on a bucket by Aleeya Grigsby. The women faced a 10-point deficit with 1:29 on the clock, but closed out the second half on an 8-2 run.
Aleeya Grigsby and Bianca Torre scored a majority of their points in the second half as Grigsby scored 16 of her 18 points in the second and Torre scored 13 of her 16.
Jessica Gerald led the way for NJIT as she scored a season-high 34 points on 10-of-20 shooting from the field, including 4-of-11 from the three-point range, and 10-of-13 from the line. She also grabbed two rebounds in 38 minutes of action.
The loss drops the Lady Broncs to 10-15 for the season and 6-3 in Great West Conference play, while NJIT improves to 10-12 overall and 5-1 in GWC play.
Up next for the Lady Broncs is a road match up against Houston Baptist on Feb. 27 in Houston, TX with tip-off slated for 5:35 p.m.
