Men's Hoops Fall to Huskies, 76-62

The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball program fell 76-62 to the Houston Baptist Huskies this Saturday (Feb. 27) afternoon at the Sharp Gymnasium in Houston, TX.

The Broncs saw themselves trailing early on as the Huskies held their largest lead of the evening at the 10:47 mark as the Huskies led 22-8.

UTPA was able to bounce back as they went on a 10-0 run to come within three of the Huskies with 6:39 left in regulation. Jared Maree scored half of the Broncs points in the 10-0 run.

The Huskies were able to extend their lead to eight on a three-point bucket and a pair of free throws with 5:45 left on the clock. The Broncs answered back with a 7-0 run to tie the score for the second time at the 3:05 mark.

The Broncs held their second lead of the contest at the 3:03 mark on a free throw shot by Nathan Hawkins. UTPA headed into the half with a one-point advantage as the Broncs led 31-32.

Houston Baptist regained their lead at the start of the second and never looked back as they handed the Broncs a 14 point loss.

Jared Maree led the Broncs with 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field and 4-of-5 from the line, to go along with four rebounds, and a pair of blocks and steals. Julius Hearn added six points for the Broncs along with five boards and a steal.

Houston Baptist finished the evening with three Huskies in double-figures with Andrew Gonzalez scoring a team-high 23 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards.

The loss drops the Broncs to 4-25 overall and 3-7 in Great West Conference play, while the Huskies improve to 9-19 for the season and 8-2 in GWC play.

The Broncs next head to Vermillion, SD as they face the South Dakota Coyotes on Thursday, Mar. 4 with tip-off slated for 8:00 p.m.
