Broncs Drop First Conference Road Match to UVU

The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball program dropped a 67-53 decision to Utah Valley this Thursday (Feb. 4) evening at the UVU Events Center in Orem, UT.

With the Wolverines taking on an early lead, the Broncs were able to bounce back as they tied the score at eight with 13:44 left on the clock after Matt Mierzycki scored two on a layup. The Wolverines then went on a 6-0 run before Justin Baker fouled Manny Hendrix and took him to the line for two; Hendrix made his second free throw with 11:38 on the clock.

After the Wolverines held an eight point lead at the 5:58 mark, the Broncs followed with a 7-1 run to come within two of the Wolverines on a three point shot by Jared Maree. Utah Valley missed a field goal attempt on the next possession and the Broncs scored three on another bucket by Maree to lead by one with 3:56 left in regulation.

UTPA was able to hold onto their lead and led by 10 heading into the half after Nick Weiermiller drained a three with 55 seconds left on the clock.

Coming out of the half, the Broncs lost grip of their lead as the Wolverines went on a 16-0 run before UTPA was able to score. Luis Valera scored two for the Broncs to break Utah Valley's run with 11:55 on the clock.

The Broncs remained within a five-point range to the Wolverines, but Utah Valley went full force as they extended their lead to double-digits at the 4:41 mark as they led by 10.

UTPA was able to score a last second bucket on a layup by Nathan Hawkins with 22 seconds left in regulation before Utah Valley secured a 67-53 win.

Jared Maree was the Broncs top performer with 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field, including 2-of-4 from three-point range, to go along with seven rebounds in 30 minutes of play.

Nick Weiermiller scored 12 for the Broncs on 4-of-13 shooting from the field, including 2-of-8 from the three-point line and 2-of-3 from the charity stripe, to go along with two rebounds and one assist in 33 minutes on the hardwood.

The Wolverines ended tonight's contest with four players in double-digits. Jordan Swarbrick scored a game-high 15 points, while Kevin Woods and Justin Baker each added 14 points apiece. Shawn Deadwiler added another 11 for Utah Valley.

The Broncs continue on their road slate with a Saturday (Feb. 6) match-up over Chicago State. Tip-off is slated for 4:30 p.m.
