Final Stats
With the scored tied heading into the top of the ninth, Texas-Pan American (7-4) gave up a run to drop a 10-9 heartbreaker to Stephen F. Austin (12-4) this Tuesday (Mar. 16) afternoon at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
What was originally scheduled for a double-header, turned into a single game due to the rainy weather conditions.
UTPA scored six runs in the opening two frames, a single in the fourth, and a pair of runs in the fifth. Garrett Bivone went 4-for-4 with two doubles, one run, and an RBI. Angel Ibanez went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Alex Carnall finished 2-for-5 and three runs scored.
The Broncs saw three pitchers on the mound with Troy Green closing out the contest and was the pitcher of record in two innings of work. Green fanned three and walked one.
"Our defense wasn't quite where we wanted it to be today. Although we didn't play well defensively, we still had a chance to win, which is a good thing," said head coach Manny Mantrana.
"Our pitching did a great job keeping us in the game - we just gave up too many runs early on in the game. Today's game will help us for this weekend's series with Iowa. It'll make the guys understand that you have to play good defensive to make those routine plays and not have such a close ball game like we did."
With runners on first and second in the bottom of the second, Vincent Mejia doubled to right center and drove in Texas-Pan American's first two runs. Three batters later with bases loaded and Angel Ibanez at the plate, Ibanez was hit by Lumberjacks' starting pitcher Zack Taylor, who received no decision. Ibanez then scored Mejia.
In the bottom of the second, with runners on first and second, Vincent Mejia was walked on an unsuspecting fourth ball. Abraham Garcia advanced to third and `Jacks catcher Jarid Scarafiotti attempted to throw Garcia out at third and overthrew the ball to the third baseman scoring Garcia.
Alex Carnall scored two batters later on a Stuart MacInnes fielder's choice, while Garrett Bivone was thrown out at second. Mejia scored on the next play on a RBI single to right by Angel Ibanez.
Stephen F. Austin combined for six runs in the second and third innings on costly errors by the Broncs. The Lumberjacks scored 3-of-4 runs in the second on back-to-back errors by the centerfielder and first baseman respectively. SFA's two runs in the third were scored on a single up the middle by Bo Coffman.
The Lumberjacks were able to score another three runs in the fourth. The Broncs answered back with a lone run in the bottom of the inning on a bases loaded hit by pitch with Jose Mendoza at the plate.
Texas-Pan American posted their final two runs in the bottom of the fifth on back-to-back plays. On an RBI single to left center by Vincent Mejia, Abraham Garcia scored from second. On the next play, Garrett Bivone doubled, for the second time during the contest, and drove in Alex Carnall from second.
Leo Chang was the Broncs middle reliever and saw four innings of work on the mound. Chang was pulled after the seventh inning and was replaced by Troy Green (1-1).
Stephen F. Austin's Tanner Hines drove in the winning run for the Lumberjacks on a single up the middle while driving in pinch runner Jordan Lewis.
Tanner Hines went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, a run, and a double.
The loss drops the Broncs to 7-4 for the season and improves the Lumberjacks to 12-4 for the season.
The Broncs next host Iowa in a three-game series on Friday, March 18. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m.
