Final Stats

The University of Texas-Pan American fell short by a score of 4-3 to the New Orleans Privateers this Monday (Mar. 22) morning at the University Tennis Center in New Orleans, Louisiana.

"We faced a really talented team today, but we got ourselves into some tough situations in a couple of matches. When you are playing against a good team like that, you can't put yourself in those situations - it's hard to get out. At this point there is no margin for error," said head men's and women's tennis coach Chris Taylor.

"We got off to a slow start, but we played good tennis overall."

The Broncs were off to quick lead as they captured the doubles point. Texas-Pan American's Andrew Irving and Marcus Dornauf defeated Rohit Chivukula and Guilherme Rebolo 8-2 at line three.

Brothers Brett and Beau Bernstein clinched the doubles point at line one with an 8-6 victory over Stepan Siska and Ben Smith. The match at line two - Aswin Vijayaragavan and Nirvick Mohinta - went unfinished due to the Bernstein's win. The match stayed at 5-5.

After the Broncs took the doubles point, Texas-Pan American was on fire taking wins at No. 1 and No. 6 singles to lead 3-0. Vijayaragavan defeated Benjamin Bouhana 6-1, 6-1 at line one and Mohinta handed Chivukula a 6-2, 6-1 loss at line six.

The Privateer men then snuck up on the Broncs with wins at No. 2, 4, and 3 singles. Brett Bernstein fell 6-2, 6-2 to Siska at line two, while Marcus Dornauf fell 7-5, 7-6 (7-0) to Abdelrahman Zaki at line four to put UTPA up 3-2. New Orleans tied the score at 3-3 on a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 win by Ben Smith at line three defeating Beau Bernstein.

Andrew Irving took his match at line five to a third set super tiebreaker after winning the first set 6-2, then dropping the second 6-7 (2-7). Irving lost 6-4 in the third set and gave New Orleans the win.

The loss drops the Broncs to 6-9 and improves the Privateers to 3-9. Texas-Pan American prepares for conference play as they face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on March 29 at 2:00 p.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
