Final Stats
HOUSTON - The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Broncs were swept in this weekend's two-game series against the Houston Baptist University (HBU) Huskies with an 11-4 loss Saturday, March 27 and Friday's 6-5 loss at Husky Field in Houston.
The afternoon game remained scoreless until the Huskies (8-10) started a 9-0 run in the bottom of the third inning, scoring four runs in the third, one in the fourth inning and four more runs in fifth. Attempting to stop the Huskies, the Broncs (9-7) made two calls to the bullpen. Scott Wingo stepped in for starting pitcher Hayden Daugherty at the bottom of the fifth inning, and A.J. Franco took the pitcher's mound at the sixth inning and closed the game.
The Broncs scored their only four runs of the game in seventh inning. Third baseman Vincent Mejia made it to home plate first following a hit from designated hitter Mike McCarthy that also advanced Garrett Bivone to third, who then scored on a wild pitch from the Huskies' Jamie Storey. Freshman Angel Ibanez was next to make it home after Ira Hernandez made it to first base on a fielder's choice that sent Alex Carnall back to the dugout.
In an attempt to stop the Broncs' run streak, the Huskies made a call to the bullpen during the top of the seventh sending Jay Reese to the pitcher's mound. Closing out the inning, Hernandez scored the fourth and final run for the Broncs after Bryant Elliott reached first base on a fielding error by HBU's Reese.
The Huskies scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning that went unanswered by the Broncs in the top of the ninth, bringing the final score to 11-4. Despite this weekend's sweep, the Broncs still lead the all-time series 13-7 against HBU.
Although UTPA and HBU are members of the Great West Conference (GWC), this series' outcome does not reflect on either team's conference record. The Broncs begin GWC play Friday, April 9 against the University of Northern Colorado at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Next up, the Broncs travel to Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Tuesday, March 30 for a 3 p.m. game, followed by a three-game series at Centenary College April 2- 4 in Shreveport, La.
