Final Stats
The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball program (4-26, 3-8) dropped an 85-79 overtime decision to the South Dakota Coyotes this Thursday (Mar. 4) evening at the DakotaDome in Vermillion, SD.
South Dakota's lead was quickly shutdown by the Broncs as UTPA tied the score within 4:43 of play. The Broncs tied the score at six on a layup by Matt Mierzycki.
The Broncs tied the score on two more occasions before taking a lead at the 13:25 mark on a free throw shot by Jared Maree. That short lived lead was quickly taken back on a layup by South Dakota's Mitchell Bouie.
On the next possession, the Broncs were able to score two on a layup by Manny Hendrix and would be the start of the Broncs first strong lead of the half. UTPA led by as much as six on two occasions - the first coming on a shot from behind the arc by Ben Smith with 10:42 on the clock and the other at the 8:12 mark on a bucket by Aaron Urbanus.
The Coyotes closed in on the Broncs lead on two occasions and took a lead after they tied the score for the fifth time on a pair of free throws by Tyler Cain with 3:30 left in regulation.
The Broncs were able to tie the score with 1:25 in the half on a free throw by Jared Maree, but it was the Coyotes who led at the half on a basket by Mitchell Bouie.
Coming out of the half, USD opened their lead to five, but was quickly shutdown as the Broncs tied the score and took a lead on a free throw shot by Nick Weiermiller. With a dunk at the 15:22 mark by Tyler Cain, South Dakota and maintained it until 4:13 in the second half as the Broncs tied the score once again on a basket by Matt Mierzycki.
In the final minutes of play, both teams tied the score on three occasions, which would be the last time either team scored in the second half and resulted in overtime. The contest headed into overtime with the score tied at 66 after Tyler Cain tied the score with 17 seconds on the clock.
Overtime consisted of three lead changes with the Broncs leading on one occasion after Luis Valera scored two for the Broncs.
The Broncs closed out the contest with four players in double-figures. Aaron Urbanus scored a team-high 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc, and 1-of-3 from the line, to go along with five rebounds and a pair of assists and steals.
Nick Weiermiller scored 14 points for the Broncs and collected eight assists and two steals. Luis Valera added 12 points and five rebounds, while Jared Maree chipped in with 10 points and three rebounds.
Tyler Cain scored a career-high 34 points on 13-of-17 shooting from the field and 8-of-13 from the line, to go along with 17 rebounds, seven blocks, five steals, and one assist.
UTPA resumes to action on Saturday, Mar. 6 as they face the North Dakota Fighting Sioux at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in Grand Forks, ND to close out the regular season.
