With 18 runs scored in the first five frames, the UTPA baseball program (5-3) defeated the LA Tech Bulldogs 23-7 this Sunday (Mar. 7) afternoon at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

UTPA repeated history by winning the rubber match. In 1998, Louisiana Tech (8-3) won the first two games and dropped the last to UTPA.

"We had a great hitting team today. Our offense responded well and Hayden (Daugherty) kept us in the game. We did something we hadn't been doing in the past, which was getting hits with runner in scoring position; we had a lot of contributors with that," said head coach Manny Mantrana.

Texas-Pan American posted 18 runs in consecutive frames as the Broncs scored three runs in the first frame, a lone run in the second, another three in the third, six in the fourth, and five in the fifth.

Louisiana Tech was able to go up on the board in the fourth and fifth innings as the Bulldogs scored three runs. The Bulldogs scored back-to-back runs in the third on RBI singles by Ashton Hughes and Kyle Roliard, respectively. Hughes drove in Clint Stubbs and Roliard Drew Thomas. LA Tech's lone run in the fifth came on a solo homerun to left by Alex Williams.

In the bottom of the fourth, three of the Broncs six runs were scored on bases loaded walks. Bases were first loaded as Vincent Mejia was intentionally walked by Kyle Roliard with Abraham Garcia on third and Bryant Elliott on second. Stuart MacInnes then singled to left driving in Garcia and Elliott.

The Broncs next batter, Angel Ibanez, was hit by the pitch moving over MacInnes and Mejia for bases loaded for the second time. Ryan Vest, who went in for first baseman Jon Coyne, walked driving Mejia for UTPA's third run of the inning. Mike McCarthy then singled to center driving in MacInnes.

With bases still loaded, Bryant Elliott was then walked scoring Ibanez. On the next at-bat by Abraham Garcia, Garcia was walked driving in Ryan Vest for the Broncs sixth run of the inning.

UTPA scored another five innings in the fifth and the last five of the contest in the seventh to defeat the Bulldogs 23-7. Louisiana Tech also scored four runs in the seventh and eighth innings, one which was on a homerun by Justin Gordey.

Many contributed to Texas-Pan American's 23-7 victory over LA Tech. Freshman Angel Ibanez finished 4-for-5 with three runs, three RBI, and a double. Mike McCarthy went 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI. Stuart MacInnes finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, four runs, and a stolen base, while Vincent Mejia was 2-for-5 with five runs, an RBI, and two doubles.

Broncs starting pitcher Hayden Daugherty notched his second win of the season with seven innings pitched. Louisiana Tech's Kyle Roliard earned the loss with three and one-third innings pitched as he gave up 12 runs on 10 hits.

The Broncs next host Notre Dame on Tuesday, Mar. 9 at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m.
