Final Stats

EDINBURG, Texas - The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) men's tennis team defeated the Lamar University Cardinals 6-1 Saturday, April 10 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center on the UTPA campus.

"The guys are playing with a lot of confidence right now. I feel like we are starting to play our best tennis, which is good as we close out the conference schedule and head into the tournament," head coach Chris Taylor said. "It is hard to pick out one guy today. Everyone contributed."

In doubles action, UTPA took the point. Beau Bernstein and Brett Bernstein played a solid set at No. 1 defeating Dennis Ermilov and Robert Lee 8-4, while Nirvick Mohinta and Aswin Vijayaragavan edged the Cardinals' Marton Horvath and Dusan Savkovic 8-2 at line two. Lamar took No. 3 with Richard Filkuka and Diego Snyder topping UTPA's Marcus Dornauf and Andrew Irving 8-4.

"The Bernstein brothers played outstanding today - just superb doubles. Beau came out with a lot of confidence in singles and took care of business, and Brett fought hard in a close first set before establishing the momentum," Taylor said.

The Broncs lead singles competition 5-1. At line two, senior Brett Bernstein swept Lee 7-5, 6-2, while sophomore Beau Bernstein swept Savkovic 6-2, 6-1at line three. In the No. 4 spot, Dornauf outlasted Ermilov 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-2, but the Cardinals took line five with Horvath defeating Irving 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Senior Mohinta took line six defeating Snyder 4-6, 6-3, 10-8. Winning the deciding point at No. 1, junior Vijayaragavan topped Lamar's Filkuka 6-2, 7-5.

"Winnie has been solid all year at No. 1, but I think his efforts sometimes get overlooked. So it was nice that today he was the deciding point for the win," Taylor said. The Broncs will hit their home court for the last time this season Tuesday, April 13 at 4 p.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center on the UTPA Campus, where they will also honor seniors Brett Bernstein and Nirvick Mohinta.
