Final Stats
BEAUMONT, Texas - The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Bronc baseball team split a doubleheader with the Lamer University Cardinals Tuesday, April 13 at Vincent Beck Stadium in Beaumont, Texas. UTPA claimed the first nine-inning game 9-7, but fell 10-0 in seven innings to the Cardinals in game two.
Game One Recap
The Broncs scored their first two runs of the afternoon in the top of the first inning when Garrett Bivone singled and notched his first RBI of the game on a run scored by Abraham Garcia, followed by a grounder from freshman Angel Ibanez that allowed Vincent Mejia to make it home.
However, Lamar answered with three runs in the bottom of the first, taking the lead 3-2.
UTPA came back to tie the game 3-3 when Garcia hit a single to center field, allowing catcher Mike McCarthy to reach home from second base.
Once again, Lamar answered in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice by Quentin Luquette and gained the 4-1 lead.
Refusing to fall behind the Broncs grabbed the 5-4 lead in the top of the third and never let go. It all started with a triple to right center by Stuart MacInnes. Then Ibanez made it to first base after being hit by a pitch from the Cardinals' Taylor McInnis. On the next at bat, MacInnes scored on Billy Donaho's single to the pitcher, and recording his first RBI of the night, Alex Carnall grounded out to first base and Ibanez scored.
McCarthy and Garcia continued the momentum scoring another two runs in the top of the sixth, with Mejia and Bivone claiming the RBI's.
Attempting to halt the Broncs, Lamar made a pitching change at the top of the seventh; however, the first batter up, Ibanez, hit a triple to right center. Outfielder Carnall sacrificed to the pitcher and collected his second RBI on Ibanez's second run of the game.
The Broncs final run was scored in the top of the ninth inning by Ryan Vest on single from McCarthy.
After UTPA took the lead in the third, the Cardinals connected with home plate three more times - once in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings, but could never come back to claim the game.
Game Two Recap
The second game of this doubleheader did not go as well for the Broncs, who went scoreless in seven innings and tallied only one hit by pinch hitter Thomas Tovar in the top of the seventh inning.
Lamar took the early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, scored one run in the second and added another three runs in third before the Broncs made a call to the bullpen, replacing starting pitcher Troy Green with Hayden Daugherty near the end of the third inning.
The pitching change was not enough to stop the Cardinals who returned in the bottom of the fourth notching two more runs, followed by one in the fifth for a 9-0 lead.
Kyle Kotchie took the mound for Daugherty just after the start of the bottom of the sixth inning for Daugherty, but the Cardinals found a way to get past him, scoring their final run of the night and claiming game two 10-0.
The Broncs (11-17, 0-4 GWC) will be back at home this weekend April 16-18 in their second Great West Conference series of the season against The University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
