Final Stats

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Traveling to San Antonio to make up last week's postponed match against the UT-Arlington Mavericks, The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) men's tennis team fell 4-3 in its last game of the regular-season Sunday, April 18 at the UTSA Tennis Center.

"That was very disappointing. Not in the fact that we lost, but how we lost. I felt we were the more talented team today, but its hard lesson to learn that talent is never enough. UTA simply wanted it more than us," head coach Chris Taylor said.

The Broncs claimed the doubles point, overpowering the Mavericks at all three lines. Beau Bernstein and Brett Bernstein took No. 1 against Dmitry Minkin and Mindaugas Celedinas 8-3. At line two, Aswin Vijayaragavan and Nirvick Mohinta also topped the Mavericks 8-3 against Brieuc Hamon and Yauheni Yakauleu. Marcus Dornauf and Andrew Irving edged Adam Srkala and Gonzalo Bienzobas 8-6 at line three.

However, the Broncs struggled in singles competition, falling at four lines. Claiming No. 1, Vijayaragavan defeated Minkin 7-6 (8), 6-1, and at line No. 2, Brett Bernstein came back from falling 3-6 in the first set to defeat Celedinas 6-4, 10-8. At line three, Hamon topped Beau Bernstein 6-4, 6-4. Yakaule claimed No. 4 for the Mavs against Dornauf 6-4, 6-4, and David Subirats took line five 7-5, 6-4 against Irving in the deciding match of the day. At No. 6 Jason Lateko defeated Mohinta 6-3, 6-3.

"We have Lamar in the tournament opener. And if we win that match, we'll get UTA again in the second round. We hope to get the chance to rectify some wrongs from today," Taylor said.

Next up, the Broncs travel to Corpus Christi, Texas for the Southland Conference Tournament, hosted by Texas A & M University-Corpus Christi at the H-E-B Tennis Center April 23-25.
