Final Stats
The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team defeated the NJIT Highlanders 8-7 in extra innings this Friday (April 23) afternoon at the Riverfront Stadium in Newark, NJ.
Both clubs took Friday's contest to 13 innings after tying the score on three occasions. With Texas-Pan American out to a 6-3 lead, NJIT answered back with a three-run homerun by Vincent Del Vecchio in the bottom nine.
The score was tied once again in the 11th as both clubs posted single runs. Texas-Pan American took the final lead in the 13th on a RBI single by Mike McCarthy driving in Angel Ibanez.
UTPA scored lone runs in the second and third frames on solo homeruns by Mike McCarthy and Garrett Bivone, respectively. The Highlanders tied the score at two runs apiece in the fifth on a costly error by RF Stuart MacInnes allowing NJIT's John Berner to reach base safely. Berner later scored on a RBI single by Del Vecchio. Del Vecchio then scored on a RBI triple by Jeffrey Pizzi.
The Broncs jumped out to their 6-3 lead with two runs in the seventh and single runs in the eighth and ninth. In the top seventh, Garrett Bivone doubled to left clearing the bases driving in Ryan Vest and Billy Donaho. Thomas Tovar and Mike McCarthy scored the Broncs lone runs in the eighth and ninth.
Texas-Pan American made multiple calls to the bullpen after starting pitcher Scott Wingo pitched seven and received a no decision. Wingo struck out a season-high eight batters and walked none, while giving up three runs - all unearned.
Left-handed pitcher Kyle Kotchie was the last to take the hill as the southpaw pitched 2 2/3 innings and struck out six of the eight batters faced to capture his (2-3) and the Broncs second conference win of the season. Kotchie also struck out the side in the 12th as he fanned Bryan Bleakley, John Berner, and James D'Aloia, respectively.
Garrett Bivone was a triple shy of completing the cycle as he finished 2-for-7 with three RBIs, a run scored, a double, and a homerun. Mike McCarthy went 2-for-4 this evening with three RBIs, two runs scored, and a homerun.
NJIT's Vincent Del Vecchio finished 4-for-5 with five RBIs, two runs scored, and a homerun. Austin McAuliffe (2-5) was tagged with the loss after 4 1/3 innings of work on the mound. McAuliffe struck out two, walked two, and gave up two runs (earned) on three hits.
The Broncs face the Highlanders for two tomorrow (April 24) morning with first pitch slated for 9:00 a.m. CT.
