Baseball Stands at 2-1 in NJIT Series

The UTPA baseball team (14-21, 3-8 GWC) split Saturday's doubleheader with NJIT as Texas-Pan American shutout the Highlanders 10-0 in Game 1 and lost 10-9 in Game 2 at the Riverfront Stadium in Newark, NJ.

Texas-Pan American 10, NJIT 0
In Game 1 of the doubleheader over NJIT, the Texas-Pan American Broncs shutout the Highlanders 10-0 in seven scheduled innings.

Six runs in the second and third frames led the way for the victory this Saturday morning at Riverfront Stadium in Newark, NJ. Texas-Pan American outhit the Highlanders 14-3 and gave up no errors, while NJIT posted an error in the fifth which eventually scored one of two runs that inning.

Mike McCarthy finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a run scored, and two doubles. Garrett Bivone went 3-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored, and a double. Abraham Garcia finished 1-for-2 with a walk, two RBIs, a run scored, and a home run.

In six innings of work on the mound, Cody Plunk (3-2) notched his third win of the season. Plunk fanned eight while walking two and gave up only three hits.

The Broncs scored in five of seven innings played with three in the second and third, two in the fifth, and singles in the sixth and seventh. In the top of the second, Mike McCarthy hit a bases clearing double to score Stuart MacInnes and would later score on a sacrifice bunt by Abraham Garcia. Iradier Hernandez scored the third run of the inning on a RBI single by Billy Donaho.

The top of the third frame repeated itself for UTPA as Thomas Tovar singled to right scoring Bivone from third. Hernandez then singled to left driving in Tovar and Vincent Mejia to take a 6-0 lead over NJIT.

Back-to-back doubles in the fifth would score the Broncs two runs as Stuart MacInnes' double scored Thomas Tovar and McCarthy's would score MacInnes. The Broncs fifth double of the contest would come in the sixth as Ryan Vest scored on a Garrett Bivone double. The final run for UTPA came in the seventh on a solo home run by Abraham Garcia.

NJIT 10, Texas-Pan American 9
A three-run ninth cost the Broncs a win in Game 2 as the Highlanders rallied from behind to defeat UTPA 10-9 this afternoon.

The Broncs posted a five-run first and gave up two runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 5-2 after the first frame. A lone run in the second by Garrett Bivone would put the Broncs up 6-2. The Highlanders managed to score a pair of runs in the third on a two-run home run by Matt Tomczyk.

NJIT scored once again in the fourth to trail Texas-Pan American by one. A two-run fifth for the Broncs would extend their lead once again, but the Highlanders answered back in the sixth with another pair of runs to put them back by one. Billy Donaho scored the Broncs final run of the afternoon on an Alex Carnall fielder's choice.

Game 2 was a staff day for the Broncs as UTPA saw six different arms on the mound. After pitching his first complete game against North Dakota, Luis Flores saw three innings of action on the hill and received a no decision, but it was Guadalupe Barrera who was tagged with the loss. Barrera pitched the ninth and gave up NJIT's winning run. The loss was the first for Barrera (1-3).

The Broncs were led offensively by Billy Donaho who went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and a run scored. Alex San Juan finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, run scored and a triple.

NJIT's James D'Aloia finished a perfect 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. DJ Roche was tagged with the win (2-0) with two innings pitched, a strikeout and two walks.

The Broncs wrap up the weekend series tomorrow morning with first pitch slated for 8:00 CT.

Note: Guadalupe Barrera did not strike out a batter in the ninth.
