NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) baseball team dropped a doubleheader to the Stephen F. Austin (SFA) Jacks Wednesday, April 7 at Jaycees Field in Nacogdoches, Texas. The Broncs fell 10-4 in game one, followed by a 3-1 loss in game two.
GAME ONE RECAP
The Jacks' Darren Crabtree gave SFA the early lead in the bottom of the first inning on a hit by Jarid Scarafiotto. UTPA tied the game 1-1 in the top of the second scoring their first run with Garrett Bivone advancing to home after Alex Carnall was hit by a pitch from SFA's Brett Higginbotham.
After the Jacks grabbed a five-run lead in the bottom of the third inning, three of those runs being homers, the Broncs made a call to the bullpen replacing starting pitcher Troy Green with freshman Luis Flores.
The Broncs were able to contain the Jacks during the fourth through sixth innings, and tallied three runs in the top of the seventh. Billy Donaho advanced from third base to home on a muffed throw by first baseman Crabtree. The second run came from Abraham Garcia on a single by Vincent Mejia. Stuart MacInnes also made it home following two throwing errors by the first baseman Crabtree and second baseman Jordan Lewis, bringing the Broncs within two runs of the Jacks 6-4.
However, SFA claimed game one 10-4, scoring an unanswered three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and one more in the bottom of the eighth.
GAME TWO RECAP
Game two of the UTPA-SFA doubleheader lasted just five innings with the Jacks taking the 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third.
The Broncs scored one run in the top of the fourth inning after Donaho reached first base on a fielding error that also allowed Mejia to make it home.
After SFA scored a third run in the bottom of the fourth, the Broncs could not find the momentum they needed to power past the Jacks in the top of the fifth inning, falling 3-1 in the second game.
The Broncs are now 10-12 for the season and will be back at home April 9-11 when they open Great West Conference play against the University of Northern Colorado at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
