Final Stats
The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team (14-25, 3-11) dropped two this Saturday (May 1) afternoon to Utah Valley (24-14, 14-1) at the Brent Brown Ballpark in Orem, UT.
Utah Valley 7, UTPA 2
In a seven inning scheduled game, Stuart MacInnes scored the Broncs two runs in Game 1 of the Saturday afternoon doubleheader.
Stuart MacInnes finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, two runs, a double, and a home run. Angel Ibanez added a 2-for-4 plate appearance with one RBI, while Vincent Mejia and Mike McCarthy each went 2-for-3.
Leading off the first frame, MacInnes opened up with a double and later scored on a RBI single by Angel Ibanez. In the top of the third, MacInnes then scored the Broncs second run on a solo home run to left field.
Texas-Pan American went through two arms in Game 1 as starting pitcher Cody Plunk (3-3) was on the mound for five innings and was tagged with his third loss of the season. Plunk was credited with all seven Wolverine runs.
Chris Benson was Utah Valley's top performer as he went 2-for-4 with five RBIs, two runs, and two home runs. Right-handed pitcher Zane Gray pitched a complete game and fanned three and walked none. Gray gave up two runs on eight hits.
Utah Valley 8, UTPA 7
Leo Chang was the Broncs starting pitcher for Game 2 and gave up eight runs to trail the Wolverines by two heading into the bottom seventh.
A five-run third put Utah Valley ahead 5-1 as Angel Ibanez had scored the Broncs lone run in the third on a RBI double by Abraham Garcia.
Texas-Pan American managed to score lone runs in the fourth and fifth to trail 5-3 in the top fifth. Utah Valley scored once again in the bottom fifth to jump ahead 6-3. Two more runs in the eighth would be the last Chang saw as he was pulled and replaced by Doug Roth. Roth managed to close out the inning without giving up any runs.
UTPA then made a comeback in the top seventh as the Broncs scored three runs to trail by two, making the score 8-6. Billy Donaho scored the Broncs first run of the frame on a RBI double after he reached on a single to right field. Two batters later, Vincent Mejia homered to left driving in Angel Ibanez.
A bases load walk in the eighth would put Texas-Pan American behind by one as Abraham Garcia was walked scoring Bryant Elliott. Elliott's run would be the last for UTPA as time ran out for the Broncs.
Vincent Mejia finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs, one run, and a home run. Angel Ibanez went 2-for-4 with an RBI, two runs scored, and a double. In 5 1/3 innings of work, Leo Chang was charged with the loss (0-4), his fourth on the season, as he struck out two and walked four.
Utah Valley's Justin Campbell was tagged with the win (3-0) as he pitched 6 2/3 innings. Brian Whatcott earned his sixth save of the season with 1 1/3 innings of work, one strike out, and one walk.
The Broncs close out the weekend series tomorrow (May 2) morning as the Broncs face-off with the Wolverines at 10:00 CT.
