Final Stats
CHICAGO - The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Bronc baseball team claimed this weekend's Great West Conference (GWC) series verses the Chicago State University (CSU) Cougars with an 8-1 win Sunday, May 16. After falling 4-3 to the Cougars Friday night, the Broncs came back to win both games of Saturday's doubleheader 9-6, 14-9.
The Broncs took an early 1-0 lead the first inning when senior Ryan Vest brought home junior Stuart MacInnes, who reached base on a one-out triple, from third base with an RBI sacrifice fly to center field.
In the top of the third inning, UTPA added a pair of runs on RBI singles from senior Abraham Garcia and Vest to lead Chicago State 3-0. The Cougar's William Hill started the bottom of third with a one-out single and later scored on an RBI sacrifice fly from senior Austin McDowell to right field that sliced CSU's deficit to 3-1.
MacInnes and sophomore Mike McCarthy recorded RBI singles in the fifth inning as part of a three-run rally by UTPA as it increased its lead to 6-1. Garcia then led off the sixth with a single and scored three plays later on a CSU error that gave the Broncs a 7-1 advantage.
The Broncs closed the scoring in the seventh inning when McCarthy, who reached base on a single, scored on freshman Angel Ibanez's RBI sacrifice fly to center field.
UTPA received 3-for-5 efforts at the plate from MacInnes and Garcia with both players scoring twice. McCarthy also went 3-for-5 on the day and Vest drove in a pair of runs. Junior Luis Flores (3-1) earned the win after posting four strikeouts and allowing one run on three hits in eight innings of work.
Next up, the Broncs (18-30, 7-16 GWC) will face New York Institute of Technology in a pair of doubleheaders Friday, May 21 at 3 p.m. and Saturday, May 22 at 2 p.m. at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium. This series will be their final GWC series of the season. The Broncs are set to host the GWC Baseball Championship May 26-29.
