Final Stats
OREM, Utah - The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Bronc baseball team fell 8-7 to the Utah Valley University (UVU) Wolverines in the final game of a Great West Conference (GWC) four-game series Sunday, May 2 at Brent Brown Ballpark.
UVU grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning that started with a run by Jake Rickenbach on an error by UTPA's catcher. Billy Burgess followed with a homer that also allowed Jace Brinkerhoff to score.
The Wolverines added another run in the bottom of the third by Rickenbach for a 4-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Broncs responded with four runs, tying the game at four. The first run was scored by freshman Angel Ibanez on a sacrifice fly by Garrett Bivone. Senior Abraham Garcia scored the second run of the inning on a single by Ryan Vest, who then scored on a left field double by Stuart MacInnes. The final run of the inning came from MacInnes on a center field single by catcher Mike McCarthy.
UTPA stole the 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth on a homerun by Garcia.
However, that lead did not last long. The Wolverines scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and one more run in the bottom of the seventh taking control of the contest 8-5.
Ibanez and designated hitter Jon Coyne tallied two more runs in the top of the eighth bringing the Broncs within one run of UVU 8-7, but UTPA could not take back the lead.
Today's game ended after eight innings due to UTPA's travel schedule.
The Broncs were led by Ibanez with 2 runs, 2 hits, and Garcia with 2 runs, 1 hit and 1 RBI. Vincent Mejia also posted 1 hit and 2 RBI.
UTPA will be back at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium next weekend, May 7-9, for a four-game GWC series against the Houston Baptist University Huskies.
