EDINBURG, Texas - The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Bronc Baseball team closed the 2010 season with a 14-1 win over the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Highlanders May 28 on the third day of the Great West Conference (GWC) Baseball Tournament at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

"It's always nice to finish the season on a winning note. It's always good to send the seniors home on a winning note. Tonight was a good night all around," head coach Manny Mantrana said.

Sophomore Vincent Mejia scored the first run for the Broncs in the bottom of the first inning after senior Billy Donaho reached on a fielder's choice.

The second UTPA run of the night was scored in the second inning on a homerun by freshman Bryant Elliott.

Both teams went scoreless until UTPA dominated the bottom of the sixth inning with 12 runs. During the inning, Mike McCarthy, Elliott and Abraham Garcia each notched 2 runs. Meanwhile, Angel Ibanez, Garrett Bivone, Vincent Mejia, Donaho, Ryan Vest and Stuart MacInnes each reached home to post one run.

Anthony Caiola posted the Highlanders' lone run of the contest in the top of the seventh inning.

Following the 10-run rule, the game ended after six and a half innings of play.

Starting pitcher Kyle Kotchie completed five innings, allowing only two hits and struck out eight batters.

"Last year we were 27 games under .500. This year, we are only 11. That is a 16 game swing, which is outstanding," Mantrana said.

The Broncs close the season 22-32, 9-18 GWC. The GWC Baseball Tournament will conclude Saturday, May 29 at 5 p.m. featuring Utah Valley University and the University of Northern Colorado.
