Volleyball drops 3-0 decision to Oral Roberts

EDINBURG, Texas - The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Broncs fell in a 3-0 (27-25, 25-20, 25-16) decision to the Oral Roberts University (ORU) Golden Eagles Saturday, Aug. 28 in the final match of the UTPA Fall Tournament.

UTPA took a hold of the lead in set one but the Golden Eagles fought back, tying the game 7-7 on an attack error by the Broncs. Both teams remained close, but a kill by Oral Roberts Elizabeth McVicker allowed the Golden Eagles to take the lead. The Broncs fought back and a kill by Kaitlin Vasquez got UTPA within one point 21-20. The teams remained close throughout the remainder of the set and tied once again 24-24 on an ORU error. A kill from Marci Logan gave the Broncs control of the set 25-24, but the Golden Eagles wouldn't back down, and came back from behind to win the set 27-25 following three straight kills.

In the second set, the Broncs stole the 2-1 lead on a service ace by senior Charity Cucancic, and remained on top of the Golden Eagles throughout the first half of the set. However, a kill by ORU's McVicker to tie the game 13-13 helped the Golden Eagles get back into the game. The score tied five more times before a kill by Jocelyn Swier sent ORU on a 5-0 run to secure the set. The Golden Eagles won the game 25-20.

Oral Roberts took early control of set three and lead by 6 points 8-2. Three Oral Roberts attack errors, two kills by Vasquez and one point my Jimena Gandara help the Broncs close the deficit to 4 points 8-12. However, the Golden Eagles seized control and gained their largest lead of 9 points 19-10 and went on the win the match with 25-16 in the third set.

Logan lead the Broncs with 16 kills, followed by Vasquez with 11.

UTPA tied with Oral Roberts for second in the tournament and Logan was voted to the All-Tournament team.

Next weekend, the Broncs will head to Arlington, Texas to play in the UT-Arlington Hilton Invitational featuring the UTPA, UALR, Mississippi State and Louisiana Tech.

The Broncs will be back at home Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. when they host south Texas rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the UTPA Wellness and Recreation Complex.
